Proposal
Third Project Proposal
Sofia Mesa
For this project I would like to explore the boundary
between the meaning of “object” and the meaning of “artwork”. The concept about
functionality vs. unfunctionality.
I want to create a hybrid of sculpture and functional
object, I’m not sure though of what object, but probably is going to be a
doll’s house, even though that I know that a doll’s house can be interpreted
also as a normal dwelling and also as a mockup. But I think this is irrelevant
because my goal is suppress any functionality, from any “object”.
I want to use found objects as materials for several
reasons, and the main one is because I tend to create my artworks in a very
structured way, I usually overthink and over-research any further step, not giving
to many possibilities to the chance. I don’t think is a good idea to stick
always to the same process and I felt like this project is a good opportunity
to release myself.
Likewise, why would I walk to a shop and waste my money,
time and energy if we live surrounded by an incredible amount of objects that
nobody want?
Alternatively, I would like to use some of the cans, plastic
bottles, tins … from my home, and any kind of suitable materials that I can
find on the street. In the same way I might use scrap materials from college
like wooden sticks, wire, glass…
However, I shall point out that I’m not specially seeking to
propose this project as a direct statement against consumption or anything
related, this time I prefer to focus in the medium rather than in the message.
I want to try to visualize some outcomes before I start
collecting the materials, guess in this way I will remain
Probably one of the key factors to suppress functionality is
assembling the pieces randomly enough to suggest unfunctionality. Similarly, I
just want to suggest architectonical pieces, not make a miniature house. I
don’t want the object to be instantly perceived by viewer as a doll house/toy
or building maquette/home.
I have been suggested to research from Eva Hesse, Thomas
Heatherwick, Frank Gehry, Robert Rauschenberg and Frank Lloyd Wright among
others. But due to the fact that I’ve previously researched the last two for
the Drawing Module, and instead of making a long list of people to research
from as I usually do, I will rather seek randomly in art magazines some artworks
that remind me of the concept of functionality vs. unfunctionality and I will Focus on Eva Hesse and Thomas
Heatherwick,.
